Sen. Rick Scott: Florida Families Still Suffering from Biden’s Sky-High Prices

May 10, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, following the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Senator Rick Scott released the below statement highlighting the need to implement substantive fiscal reforms to end the ongoing inflation crisis fueled by the Biden administration’s reckless tax-and-spend agenda. April’s CPI data shows that there has been a significant rise in inflation during Biden’s presidency, with CPI increasing 4.9% and core CPI increasing 5.5% in April 2023. Since Biden took office, inflation is up 16.0%. Additionally, for 25 straight months, inflation continues to outpace Americans’ rising wages—making it tough for Florida’s families to make ends meet.

Senator Rick Scott said, “I don’t understand why Joe Biden doesn’t care about American families. Look at what is happening to our country. Extreme Democrats under the leadership of Joe Biden have run the economy into the ground, watched inflation get sky high and are now completely ignoring their responsibility to get a deal done on the debt ceiling. Republicans have put forth commonsense legislation to get this country back on the path of fiscal sanity to provide some relief. Democrats’ extreme position continues the ruinous dysfunctional ways of Washington—high inflation, $31 trillion worth of debt, and an end to the American dream as we know it. It is beyond time to get our finances under control—the American people deserve to have fiscal sanity and that’s what I’m fighting to deliver.”

According to today’s CPI release, price increases over the year include:

  • Margarine: +23.8%
  • Eggs: +21.4%
  • Frozen Vegetables: +18.9%
  • White Bread: +14.4%
  • Transportation Costs: +11.0%
  • Lunchmeat: +8.3%
  • Rent: +8.8%
  • Electricity: +8.4%
  • Food: +7.7%
